Chemical Engineering

“Science can amuse and fascinate us all, but it is engineering that changes the world.” – Isaac Asimov

Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineering is the designing, manufacturing and operating of plants and machinery to carry out large-scale industrial chemical, biological or related processes. It also involves in the research, design, development, construction, modification and operation of new or adapted substances to produce a broad range of valuable products. The subject combines several academic disciplines of engineering such as Natural and Experimental Sciences (Chemistry and Physics), Life Sciences (Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry) together with Mathematics and Economics.

While the fundamentals of Chemical Engineering have not changed, the subject has seen constant progress and changes over the years. Chemical Engineers are often spearheading new and improved materials and techniques which help cultivates scientific knowledge in fields such as bioengineering, fabric development, fuel cells, mineral processing and nanotechnology. In addition, Chemical Engineering students will be taught to consider economic viability, management of resources, health and safety, sustainability and environmental impact. The various Chemical Engineering specialisations include Chemical Reaction Engineering, Plant Design, Process Engineering, Transport Phenomena, and Process Design.
